The Workplace Design

The boardroom at Bombardier encapsulates the brand’s history of visionary thinking. The elegant marble table commands attention as you step inside, symbolizing confidence and legacy. Every detail in our modern office design is deliberately chosen to highlight the brand’s strong foundation and forward-thinking ethos. The sleek, thoughtfully designed aesthetics in the boardroom serve as a perpetual source of inspiration, echoing Bombardier’s innovative spirit, encouraging everyone who gathers there to venture into new territories and shape the industry’s future.

Recognizing the importance of a warm and inviting workplace interior for employees, we created an employee cafe that fosters a sense of familiarity, nostalgia, and community. Accented features inspired by local memories such as traditional geometric tiles and rustic panelled walls serve as conversation points within the space, creating an atmosphere that encourages interaction and nurtures an inspiring work environment.

Wel-hunt is a global commodity trading company that specialises in the trade of agricultural products, metals, and energy. Their Taiwanese headquarters is known for its open and collaborative workplace, which they wanted to replicate in their new office design in Singapore.

A collaborative effort with their Taiwanese architect resulted in the creation of an office that features an open concept with glass walls integrated to create rooms that allow for plenty of natural light and promote a sense of openness and collaboration.

The design needed to reflect the firm’s evolution, moving away from the traditional, rigid law firm environment to embrace a more open and hybrid working style.

To support this transition, we held workshops with stakeholders to better understand their needs and gather the necessary facts and figures. This allowed us to plan the office space more effectively, ensuring that it met the specific requirements of the firm.

A key aspect of the design was spatial efficiency, particularly as the firm was right-sizing its office space. We carefully optimised each area for functionality and utility, incorporating versatile elements such as a large meeting room in the client area that can be converted into an event space. This flexibility enhances the firm’s ability to engage with clients in various settings.

In keeping with a focus on well-being, we integrated Biophilia throughout the office, fostering a connection to nature that promotes a calming atmosphere and supports overall wellness for both clients and staff.

The office design also embraces a neighbourhood setting, strategically positioned near amenities and with thoughtful overlap between different areas to facilitate interaction. A booking system for desks ensures availability when staff return to the office, and the space is tailored to accommodate different work types across the firm.

Reflecting the firm’s flat hierarchy, the design features unassigned, bookable offices of uniform size, underscoring their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The office layout includes two distinct journeys: one for clients, leading to all areas accessible to visitors, and another for employees, ensuring that internal spaces maintain the privacy and confidentiality essential in a legal setting.

The new office space for Withers KhattarWong successfully bridges the gap between tradition and modernity, offering a versatile environment that supports the firm’s dynamic way of working. It stands as a testament to the firm’s commitment to innovation, collaboration, and community impact while staying true to its legacy of over 125 years of legal excellence.

The Office Design

Our design concept, “The New Dynamic,” empowers individuals to be fearlessly independent. This modern office serves as a guiding force to help team members excel.

Our design approach focused on crafting an optimal workplace experience that aligned with New Balance’s values. By reinventing workflows, we aimed to enhance productivity and workmanship quality while fostering a healthy and positive working environment. We aimed to enhance New Balance’s brand by creating an environment that empowers individuals, fostering a positive atmosphere that inspires meaningful change in their work lives.

We incorporated a symbolic running track into the office. While not a functional one, this visually dynamic addition serves as a powerful representation of the brand’s athletic identity. This creative touch adds a unique and engaging element to the office design, embodying the spirit of the brand and fostering a sense of inspiration and motivation among team members.

We incorporated vibrant New Balance reds and sleek greys throughout our office design to mirror the brand’s iconic colours. Thoughtfully distributed throughout the office, these striking hues bring forth a refreshing and visually engaging experience. The vibrant reds exuded energy and passion, symbolizing the brand’s commitment to excellence and highly motivated individuals. In contrast, the cool greys exuded a sense of sophistication and stability, reinforcing the workplace’s professional and modern ambience. This seamless fusion of colours served as a powerful expression of New Balance’s strong and bold branding, establishing a cohesive and captivating atmosphere that resonated with both employees and visitors alike.

Our collaboration with New Balance resulted in a modern workplace that not only reflected the brand’s philosophy but also provided a platform for employees to thrive. These innovative elements and a focus on enhancing productivity were at the forefront of this project – the result? An environment that supports personal growth and fosters a positive working culture.

Sennex worked collaboratively with three stakeholder groups who had input into the design process; the Client, the Change Management Consultant and, the Client’s branding agency. Sennex served as the intermediary between the three groups and was instrumental in balancing and managing each party’s expectations to produce an exceptional solution that successfully integrates Function & Form which is not always an easy task.

  • Space utilization data captured over a 3-month period using occupancy sensors as part of SNX’s occupational planning services was used to drive decision making in respect to the design of the new workplace

Balancing Form & Function

Functional planning drivers support workflow productivity and efficient space economy and utilisation whereas, ‘form’ is all about aesthetics and emotional and visual delivery. To effectively integrate Function & Form, a set of 5 space typologies was developed. For example, “Gather Locations” were classified as ‘energy giving’ spaces for all to learn, grow, and rejoice, whilst “Focus Spaces” were designated as places for productivity and to carry out our daily tasks.

Zespri’s commitment to health and well-being is evident throughout but our space typologies include “Recharge Spaces” which are places for staff to unwind, deeply connect and rebalance. We also have ‘Synergistic Spaces which are for ‘pushing the boundaries’ and ‘making things happen’ and “Conversation Spaces” which are for formal meetings. Each space type has its colour, material, and texture palette, as well as furniture, props, and brand assets that all contribute to the function or purpose of the space. This approach led to a ‘natural’ balance between Function & Form.

We were able to weave Zespri’s new branding and spirit into different work typologies throughout the office, creating an immersive brand experience that balances form with function.

Apart from well-being, Zespri places a high value on sustainability, as indicated by the use of sustainable products and natural, authentic materials throughout. The use of real plants, bold accent colours, and a few “playful surprises” in the workplace reflect Zespri’s brand philosophy.

Design Thinking Approach

Following our appointment, Sennex’s Strategy and Design Team began to formulate a return brief using a Design Thinking methodology – a process for creative problem-solving. It begins with people and their needs, to frame challenges and inspire fresh ideas by determining what people truly require. This was achieved through a combination of observation, interviews, hackathons, extensive persona building, and desk-top research, all of which allowed us to look beyond obvious solutions.

As one would expect of a leading multidisciplinary engineering practice which was recently voted one of Australasia’s most innovative companies, Aurecon likes to do things differently. Their working style is highly collaborative, and their firm’s modus operandi is to work alongside client’s to co-create clever, innovative solutions. Aurecon naturally wanted to approach their workplace project similarly and the true spirit of co-creation, they challenged our team to find the optimum solution.

This is where our design-led thinking approach kicked in, allowing us to push past the obvious to craft a sustainable, collaborative and inspiring workplace design that supports Aurecon’s quest to “bring ideas to life”.

Designing Sustainability Into the Workplace

In terms of sustainability in the workplace design, an important initial consideration was daylight. Our interior design planning aimed to maximize the infusion of natural sunlight into the office for the benefit of the many living plants (no artificial plants were used as part of our biophilic inspired design) that aims to emphasize the symbiotic interaction between people and the natural world.

Since daylight is also pretty good for humans too, we placed key event and community spaces in areas with good views. Wherever possible, furniture was recycled, and new joinery items were specially designed and built to be easily re-used in the event of future relocation. Aurecon’s dedication to sustainability is further demonstrated by this forward-thinking strategy. Staff is educated on sustainability which is promoted through thoughtful branding visuals.

Urban Farm Element

A real-life urban farm is a key design element that has been cleverly integrated into the reception area. The urban farm project is a local client team-inspired and run initiative which grows edibles and vegetables organically using energy-efficient technologies. This not only creates a talking point for clients and staff but serves as a metaphor for Aurecon’s quest to “bring ideas to life and, their firm undying commitment to sustainability.

Aurecon’s office reflects their commitment to sustainability, innovation and wellbeing.

Aurecon knows that breakthrough ideas can come from unlikely sources, and we wanted to pay homage to this. With this idea in mind, a LEGO wall was designed into the library area. This isn’t just a gimmick, aside from the obvious link between Lego and building; it serves multiple goals, including sparking creativity through the use of one’s imagination and serving as a fun, stress-relieving exercise that every engineer can relate to and appreciate.

‍The Lego wall includes Singapore themed Legos such as the Merlion, Art Museum and National flag which all serve to reinforce pride in the Country.

‍Other branding initiatives include using Singapore street names and landmarks as part of the wayfinding strategy to make it easier to identify and relate to space such as aptly named, ‘Satay by the Bay’ which is the main café and event space.

Pertamina International Shipping sought to create a headquarters that reflected their commitment to efficiency, sustainability, and innovation in the shipping industry. They required a space that would facilitate seamless operations while offering a welcoming and inspiring environment for their team, clients, and visitors, set against the stunning view of the Marina Bay waterfront.

The design concept focused on neutral and natural tones to establish a serene and inviting atmosphere. The colour palette included shades of beige and white, creating a calming backdrop that evokes a sense of tranquillity. This approach aligns with the maritime industry’s connection to nature and the sea.

Design elements such as organic curves and bright, open spaces were integrated to soften the overall environment and create a sense of flow and continuity. Large windows allow natural light to flood the space, offering a breathtaking view of the Marina Bay waterfront. This connection to the outside environment, reminiscent of the openness of the sea, enhances the overall ambience, making the space feel both welcoming and uplifting for anyone who enters.

ofi (Olam Food Ingredients), a global leader in naturally good food and beverage ingredients, aimed to establish an advanced laboratory facility. The objective was to craft a workplace in Singapore that mirrors their sustainability and innovation values while nurturing research and development initiatives for the food and beverage sector. To realise this vision, ofi partnered with Sennex, in collaboration with two distinguished agencies within the MISSION Group – Bray Leino and ALIVE, who were contracted to oversee the branding aspect of the space.

Working closely with ofi, Sennex conceptualised and executed the design and build of the customer solutions centre. Bray Leino, as the lead agency, took charge of developing the concepts and creative solutions for the different spaces, while ALIVE’s expertise and experience facilitated the production and installation of the creative brand elements.

The centre was designed to maximise space and provide a functional environment that encourages innovation. The laboratories and sensory labs facilitate research and development activities while the customer solutions centre was carefully crafted to provide a welcoming and informative space for customers and partners to interact with ofi’s experts and learn about their products and solutions. It has become a hub for meaningful interactions, fostering strong relationships with customers and partners.

In addition to its laboratory facility and customer solutions centre, ofi also adopted an open-plan workplace design, including a thoughtful laboratory interior design, to promote collaboration and communication among its employees. This thoughtful design approach aimed to break down physical barriers and foster a sense of community and teamwork within the organization. By eliminating these boundaries, employees from different teams and departments could seamlessly interact, share ideas, and exchange knowledge, promoting a culture of innovation and cross-functional cooperation.

Additionally, the pantry has been thoughtfully designed to serve as a comfortable and inviting social hub. Beyond its mealtime function, this space encourages employees to unwind, engage in casual conversations, and establish connections with their peers. Featuring cosy seating arrangements, the pantry exudes a warm atmosphere that fosters relaxation and a sense of community, further promoting collaboration within the workforce.
